Volunteer Hours

Volunteering is the heartbeat of the Burlington Sailing & Boating Club (BS&BC), where our members' dedication and enthusiasm keep our community thriving. Every season, we rely on the collective efforts of our members to help run events, maintain the facilities, and ensure a smooth operation throughout the sailing season. Your participation not only supports the club but also enriches your own experience by fostering stronger connections with fellow members.

Why Volunteer?

Volunteering is more than just a requirement; it's an opportunity to contribute to the vibrant community that makes BS&BC special. Whether you're helping with race management, organizing social events, or assisting with maintenance tasks, every hour you contribute directly benefits the club and its members. Plus, volunteering is a great way to develop new skills, meet like-minded people, and immerse yourself in the sailing culture.

How to Volunteer

There are numerous ways to get involved at BS&BC. Here's how you can contribute your time and skills:

  • Events: From cruises to social gatherings, we host various events throughout the season that require volunteers for setup, registration, food service, and more.
  • Officer of the Day (OOD): Volunteer in the OOD programme welcome visitors to the marina. We receive the same benefit when we go on a cruise and visit reciprocal clubs.
  • Race Committee: Join the race committee to help with the organization and management of races. Roles include timekeeping, score recording, and ensuring safety on the water.
  • Facility Maintenance: Keep our clubhouse and boating compound looking its best by assisting with maintenance tasks. This could involve anything from landscaping to minor repairs around the clubhouse.
  • Mentored Sailing Programme (MSP): Help nurture the next generation of sailors by becoming a mentor in our MSP programme. Whether you're an experienced sailor or just great with kids, your involvement is invaluable.

You will be able to sign up for volunteer opportunities after applying for membership. In the club portal you can view upcoming events and tasks that need support and register for the ones that match your interests and availability. Regular email reminders will also be sent out to keep you informed about new opportunities.

Volunteer Hours Requirement

To ensure the smooth operation of the club, we ask each senior member to complete a minimum of 20 volunteer hours per season. Intermediate members complete at least 10 hours. This requirement is designed to distribute the workload fairly among all members while ensuring that everyone has a chance to participate in the community. Fulfilling these hours can be done at your convenience throughout the season, with plenty of opportunities to contribute.

For those who find it challenging to meet the 20-hour requirement, there are alternative ways to support the club. Members can opt to contribute financially in lieu of hours.

Tracking Your Hours

Tracking your volunteer hours is easy. For structured events such as the OOD programme, the number of hours is predetermined and fixed. For other tasks, such as maintenance tasks, you simply log your hours below. This helps us recognize your contributions and ensures that you meet the season's requirement. At the end of the season, members who go above and beyond in their volunteer efforts are celebrated during our Annual General Meeting, with special recognition given to those who contribute the most.
